Access to Food

Meals indigenous to certain cultures stem from the foods that are available in that Geographic region. India as well as SriLanka are tropical countries all year round and therefore many of the foods are available 365 days of the year. Kamala mentions that in India vendors would come door to door to sell fresh groceries every day. Her mother would purchase what she needed for the day from the venders. There were also a few grocery stores nearby where dry goods, dhals, and spices were bought. Everyone in her family took turns to go to the grocery store when needed. Similar to Kamala, Rajeswary’s family would go to a nearby grocery store to purchase dry goods when needed. Luckily for her, a bakery was steps away from their house so she would go over there to get bread when need be. Unlike Kamala’s family Rajeswary had to go to a nearby market to get fruits and vegetables. This was done by her mother during the day while the children of the house were at school. Now that she's in Canada, Rajeswary purchases her foods from several different Tamil stores in Scarborough. Kamala now purchases many of her spices and dry goods from a nearby No Frills and Walmart. Not only do they have designated aisles for each ethnicity containing the products that are indigenous to it, she says that it is often cheaper to buy from these bigger stores than the smaller stores that she has been going to all of these years.
