Idli
Idli is a popular breakfast food in South India. K.T Achaya describes it as a white, spongy , swollen circlet about 10 cm across. Like dosai it is made with rice and urud dhal and it is eaten with Samb(h)ar or Coconut Sambol.
In Tamil it is pronounces It-al-ee. It had only made it into Tamil literature in the 17th century but was present in Kannada literature dating back to 920 AD.
There are idli variations:
Rava idli which is made with Semolina
Thair Idli which is made with Yogurt.
Kanchipuram idli is served at the Devarajaswami temple and weighs up to 1.5 kg!
