GLOBAL ASIA STUDIES
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION
Chennai India vs. Karaveddi Sri Lanka
Through both interviews it was clear that the geographic location of Tamil speaking individuals had minimal influence on the foods that they ate. Payasam, Vada, Dosai, Idli, Rice, and a variety of curries (Sambar) were eaten by Kamala and Rajeswary regardless of the fact that Kamala was brought up in Chennai India and Rajeswary was brought up in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka and India are similar in temperature and very close in proximity therefore the difference in location has not significantly affected culture and cuisine.
Vegetables that were available in India for Kamala's purchase were beans, eggplant, plantain, cabbage
and her family would buy beetroots, carrots, and potatoes at least once a week. For Rajeswary, Murungakai (Drumsticks), Katharikai (Eggplant), Keerai (Spinach), Paithangkai (Long beans), and Paavatkai (bitter melon) were available all year round. In terms of fruits she would have Pillappalam (jack fruit) mangoes, and banana all year round. Apples were imported and had on occasion. Kamala would also have the same fruits demonstrating a similar pattern of movement in terms of foods.
