Connecting the Dots

Chennai, India and Karaveddi, Sri Lanka are two different cities but one language keeps the lives of thousands of individuals connected. With language comes culture and with culture comes rituals, traditions, and common practices. Tamil speakers of both India and Sri Lanka seem to differ in geographic location but not so much in their day to day practices. Based upon two oral interviews as well as the fact that I myself am emersed in this culture, the foods that are made by Tamil speakers  in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankans are similar if not identical.

By comparing Kamala and Rajeswary's oral interviews a number of key themes that connected their stories stood out. There were similarities in the foods that were eaten for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, there were similarities in the tools that were used for cooking, there were similarities in the ingredients that they would always have on hand. All in all their lives pre and post migration seem to have a strong thematic connection regardless of their origins.
