The Role of Men

Tamil culture has viewed cooking as a female role so men of the household were hesitant to enter the kitchen to cook main meals. They did however take on roles that were thought of as "manly" such as handling the meat. Due to the fact that Kamala was vegetarian she was never one to touch meat but since her husband was a non-vegetarian he would cook chicken. He loved to prepare chicken curry but Kamala was usually not in the kitchen at that time.

In Rajeswary's household she grew up eating seafood not meat. Her mother would go to the nearby market and purchase fish, shrimp, squid, and shark depending on what they wanted to eat that day. She would have chicken on occasion which would be purchased from a nearby neighbour who raises and sells them. Once purchased her brother or father would cut and prepare it to be cooked.
