Movement of Tools

In Canada using top of the line blenders, toasters, stoves, coffee machines etc are marketed heavily but the luxury of life in Canada is not comparable to life in India and Sri Lanka. Kamala recalls the hardships of cooking in India due to the fact that they did not own a modern day stove or a blender. Both Kamala and Rajeswary recall using an “ami” (grinding stone) and mortar and pestle to grind and mix ingredients. Everyone in the family would share the task of grinding ingredients to the desired consistency.

Kamala grew up in a three bedroom apartment. When asked about the tools that she used to cook she smiled as she remembered her old Karosin stove. Before the modern stove entered India she would use a Wood or Charcoal stove. Upgrading to a Gas stove eased the cooking process. They would use bell metal, clay, brass, and steel pots and pans. Rajeswary's experiences were the same. It was not until her brother brought back a blender from a job he had gotten in Saudi Arabia that they had access to a blender.

Cooking food was once a very labour intensive job but due to the invention and movement of tools the process is now much faster and easier.
